HI,

I have a 30g reef tank I started about 6 months ago. I have several corals but my Metallic Green Open Brain seams to be dying. In one spot some of it's skeleton is showing. I've been trying to look online for some suggestions but have come up short. The one thing I have done is place it up higher on my rock to be closer to the light. (This is what the pet store owner suggested. He is very into marine tanks) I was just wondering if there is any thing else I can do. If any one has any other suggestions I would be very happy to here them!!!

Well, give us some more info on your tank setup, and we will gladly try to assist. Without knowing all the details of your system there is no we can really even try to give you some advice...

What is the bio-load (how many of what species of fish, corals, other inverts?)
What are your water parameters? (That is: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, alkalinity/hardness, calcium, phosphate...)
What filtration do you have?
What lighting is there - and how long are they on every day?
What pumps / water flow do you have?
Are you using a skimmer - what model?
How often do you do partial water changes?
What type of water do you use for top-ups to replace evaporated water?
Have you ever used any medicine in the tank?
How often do you feed your fish? Do you ever feed your corals - if so, what and how often?

I have an Oceanic bio cube it has a built in filter system. I dont have a skimmer. It has compact lighting. There is 2 pumps/highwater flow. My husband does the partial water change every other week. I use tap water that is treated with prime for evaporation (other fish goes in my area do the same) never used medicine in the tank. The fish are fed almost every day. The corals depending on the kind - carnivor ones every day, others every other day. As for my Bio load I have 2 Perculia Clown Fish (false), 1 Yellow Coral Gobie, Red Sun Coral, Metallic Green Open Brain, Waving Hand Xenia, Toad Stool Leather, Metallic Green Torch Coral, Blue Linkia Star Fish, 1 White Striped Cleaner shrimp, 2 feather dusters, 9 hermit crabs and over 20 snails. I also have a coral I cant remember the name of it. Its a polyp of some kind eats brine shrimp. I would put a picture of it up but I cant figure out how, if you look at my picture by my name it's sitting above the sun coral. My husband does the water parameters and he said they are all good. The brian was doing well untill last week. Since I got it is has been growing. Would hermit crabs hurt it? I noticed that it was dying in the same spot a crab had been sitting for a while? I hope all the info I gave will help.

forgot the name

I figured out how to post a picture. Here is a coral that I cant remember the name of.

Could you have hurt it a bit when you moved it? The crab was most likely just going after rotten meat. I'd just keep an eye on it if it's otherwise healthy a little damage should heal quickly. What are your params?
oh, and that's a button polyp of some sort.

Thanks, I did move it after is was hurt. However maybe it got hurt while doing something else. My husband does the params. I asked him and he said they were good.

what are the readings though? Lots of corals are really sensative to nitrates and nitrites. You might consider putting a couple of drops of lugols into the tank as well just to assist it in healing.

I'll try that. Tonight I test all the params again and double check them.

In addition to that what is near it as far as other corals go? It is possible it is being stung. Is it acting healthy otherwise? Meaning is it inflating during the day and such?

Oh...is there a reason why you are feeding the corals so often? It sounds like overkill to me and I'm suprised you don't have a water issue with the amount of waste and decay that would cause.

It is inflating durring the day and is not near an agressive coral. We are feeding the sun coral every day because was struggling. We got it the day it arived at the store, and it was not opening well. I made a special underwater feeder for it and at night when it starts to open I put the feeder on in and feed it. So when I take off the feeder some shrimp that the sun coral didnt get the other do. The sun coral is doing much better now. I don't feed the other every day. They just get the runaways.
