How would you identify between a juvenile (2") Parachromis managuensis and a Parachromis motaguense. I picked up the little guy from a Petco where he was marked as a C. managuensis - considering it was a Petco however, the designation doesn't neccessarily mean much. I thought jaguars were fairly uninteresting when young - and that any markings they had were just spots. This little guy is gorgeous - he has a series of very distinct darker vertical stripes all along his body against a golden base colour. He also has a number of black patches and spots on his head, gill covers and belly, and a black band running between his eyes. What do you guys think?

well the jaguar cichlid should look easy to distinguish from a motoguense. Just look at a couple internet pics. You should be able 2 tell well..

Haha...that is strange. You said the compatible for Dovii was GT in that website. When I checked...it said compatible fish could be GOLDFISH, catfish, pacu, gourami, and Dovii.
Yeah...that site is very confusing, but I was posting here to let polosniffer compare the pictures of Parachromis managuensis and Parachromis motaguense.
However, anyone sees that website....don't look at the compatible fish. Make sure you understand...some fish are just plain aggressive. Don't...I mean Don't...try to mix Dovii with gold fish...hahah...that is dinner for Dovii. Please read the profile of the fish before thinking to mix Dovii with other fish. That fish is a destroyer :D

no check compatability for green terror and it lists the dovii and tiger barbs. Anyone who knows anything about cichlids really knows that neither of those fish are compatable with any CA cichlids.

Oh my god...hahaha...that is better than trying to look for Dovii's compatible tank mate. Goldfish came up as match. Hahaha...when I saw that...I'm like...that big goldfish must look very yummy to the Dovii.
Honestly...I never check their compatible tank mates...in that website. I think they use the...what they call Visual Basic/SQL language to help with the match...that's why all the matches came out wrong. The author of the website should get raid of the query on that website...it is confusing people when it comes to looking for their compatibility. :D

Ridiculous compatibilty reccomendations aside, the pictures did help quite a bit - thanks for the link peifc. Based on the pictures, I'm pretty sure my little guy is a motaguensis and not a jaguar. I guess it's time to go out and buy some big goldfish as tankmates ;)
HAHAHA...now all my co-workers think I'm nutty that I'm laughing at the computer.
Yeah...go get a gold fish. I bet your motaguensis will have one heck of a big tummy. That little guy will not need to eat for a month. And you will find one big fish skelaton left on the bottom of the tank.
Haha...that was funny. :D
