well, I've started to cycle a new 20g tank and was wondering what fish I should add to it.

So far, I was gonna start with 4-6 zebra danios, and then if they did okay, add 4-6 tiger barbs. But, I would really like to add a third species to the tank, some type of bottom dweller would be nice. Also, what invertebrate would go well with them?

thanks all.

Have you considered fishless cycling? Then you only get the fish you really want, instead of the ones that can survive the cycle.

For a bottom dweller, look into the ancistrus species, and cories. Their smaller size will do well in your tank. Kuhli loaches are a nother great bottom dweller, does best in small groups.

oh, I was gonna actually drop the danios in as test fish after my fishless cycle, and I really love barbs. I'll look around at different cory's to add though, thanks.

you got some fast swimmers and some fin nippers. so consider fish that can keep up with the 2 species.

how about rainbow fish. one of the smaller species. fast swimmers, short finage, great colors.

for bottom dwellers, i would go with probably some Kuhli loaches like oriongirl stated. i've had one before and they are super fast swimmers.

my personal experience with choosing fish for my tank is that for me, most of the times, i just go the LFS, see what's good, then ask around here to find out compatablilty. When you're at the LFS, you can see the fish behaviour and sometimes it just strikes you that u want that fish.

I just meant that after I test my water to make sure it's at the proper levels, I was gonna start by adding the danios, 2 at a time, and if the water is at acceptable levels, add more fish, probably 2, every 1 1/2 weeks.

When you do a fishless cycle you can add all the fish at once when it is done. You actually *want* to add them before your bacterial bed begins to decline.
