What all is in your tank? Any other bio-bed areas, water movement?
Often, parts wear out, and can be replaced easily, and cheaper than buying a whole new unit. Try cleaning the pump completely checking the impeller for wear and damage.

I agree with Orion Girl, I have 2 fluval 303's and they are notorious for ceasing up. Stop the pump and clean the impeller. Sometimes you may have to replace the inner shaft assembly as well.

sorry for not getting back right away. I brought a inexpensive filter until I can get a sump system.
OrionGirl, I have one power head and the skimmer. And I do agree with you CHughes that the parts can be replaced, however my brother had one as while. When the pump stopped on him he lost his entire stock.
I feel a little uneasy, I don't want to be worried about that filter. I have a landscape co. and I have little time at home except on the weekend. I do brief check on the tank doing the week.
What do you think about a sump system vs canister? Thanks for your time:)

I'm newbie to marines, but I believe a sump system would be preferred for filtration. Canisters tend to be ignored when it comes to cleaning. BTW my last surviving 303 ceased on tank yesterday...thank goodness the freshwater fish a bit more forgiving. I'll be removing it tomorrow!

I priced the sump unit at my lfs, and for a 55g it would cost $225.00. It would give me piece of mind. I know it is a little more evaporation process but it is worth it. bye
