Tempered Glass

How neccessary is a tempered glass bottom for a tank? I am currently looking at either a 55 gallon or 75 gallon tank with aquacultured live rock (about 2 pounds per gallon) over live sand.

It's not necessary, since a tank without a tempered bottom will use thicker glass. Most manufacturer's don't make them without the tempered bottoms anymore--is this used?

No. I am look at an All-Glass new, probably 75 gallon. I was just wondering if I needed the 75E, which is tempered.

Ahh. I looked at the 75's a while back, and thought the 75E was a different shape than the 75L? Though that was with corner overflows, which may be why the shape was different.
