I want to subscribe to a fish magazine, but I don't know which. I bought 4 tropical fish hobbiests and they were pretty good. Is aquarium fish better? Any others very good?

I am subscribing to TFH and aquarium fish mag. right now. I like TFH hobbiest the best as it isn't as basic as Aquarium fish. Aquarium fish seems like it is more for the beginner and has alot more question and answer stuff.

I have also picked up a few FAMA but didn't really like it. Practical fishkeeping was another one i liked but it costs 9$can an issue so i don't get it often.

I vote for TFH

Wow.....ditto to exactly what Valerie said. I would go along with her post word for word. I subscribe to both TFH and AFM, and tried FAMA for a while, but didn't like it much. I also am a fan of Practical Fishkeeping, but can't see myself forking out that much cash.

For more detailed info, either buy a book or look online. I do both, personally!;)

If you are a beginner Aquarium Fish is good and explains things in a language you can understand, and treats everyone as a first time subscriber. An expert will get bored quickly with this magazine however because it covers the same basic ground over and over. The questions and answer usually consist of a ten year old with a Pacu, Oscar, Channel Cat and Pleco in a ten gallon asking advise on poor water conditions and you get to hear the same sermon an old women got the month before who was keeping 3 Koi in a five gallon and wondering why the water is the color of coffee.

Tropical Fish Hobbyist is more scientific and goes into very in depth detail on individual species and is aimed more for experts who have been doing this for a while. It assumes you already know basic fishkeeping, have been a lifetime subscriber, and it does not repeat itself, so you will have to look through back issues at the library from time to time to know what they are talking about. A beginner who is not into breeding or rare species may find this magazine over their head and possibly boring.

Ditto all the above posts. Aquarium Fish seems to cover the same basic things over and again though they have good articles and specials on fish species. The other mags are less basic, Tropical Fish Hobbyist and TFH appeal more to me in general.

I would definately go with TFH. Aquarium fish focuses too much on salt water(which could be good or bad depending on you) TFH has a lot more useful information for beginners and really has helped me with a lot of things. Personally I think Aquarium Fish sucks.

I think that Practical Fish Keeping is the best magazine, although it is also the most expensive.

Wow, Im amazed the amount of over seas people that get practical fishkeeping! To me its one of the cheaper magazines at £2.95. Certainly the best!

Hi,
I'd recommend either Aquarium Fish, or my own magazine, Tropical Fish Monthly (http://www.tropicalfishmonthly.fish-forum.com).
