Ebay (http://www.ebay.com)
I got mine on the north shore of Lake Superior. A bit far for you I guess but the point is, walk the beach and find a piece you like.

Mgamer lives too far down the coast. The most spectagular driftwood, enough to build a shelter, I ever saw was on the beach in Oregon...

I'll second that Wetman! I've got family in Oregon and remember seeng tons of the stuff on a few beaches.

I remember walking around on the driftwood littered shore of Puget Sound, in West Seattle, a few years back. There were a lot of pieces of driftwood that all looked the same: about six feet long, about as thick as a baseball bat and tapered in just the same way, but with little worn down knobs running the whole length. After a mile or two and dozens of pieces we sorted it out… old Christmas trees.
My very favorite driftwood is a mountain shrub that grows all along the east coast. When individuals die they tend to hang in the thickets and weather dry without rotting. I like this better than anything I've found on the beaches around here. Wander… you're sure to trip over something or other (I always do :p ).
I also got a few nice pieces off of ebay from a guy up in Maine. Nice, big, and cheap compared to LFSes. (That was back when I was dreaming of the big tank… on hold for the foreseeable future :( ).

I got my driftwood from www.aquariumdriftwood.com it was simply amazing. When I first got it I was unsure because it didn't look liek though tit would. I had this image of what I thought would be a good piece and this didn't look like it, well needless to say it's the most amazing thing in my tank. It fit perfectly in my tank based on the dimensions I sent, it had about less than .5" on all sides. The color was amazing and still is, its got all kinds of purple shades in it, the wood comes moist so you just need to stick it in, I think I got critters with mine, but nothing serious just little water beetle things which were cool, but ultimately died anyways. The company is friendly to deal with and when you order you can give a basic description and they'll hand pick a piece that fits your description at no extra charge! I feel like I should do a commercial for them heh. I'd check em out if you are looking for good driftwood.

Wow this is an old one. But to answer your question, soak it in some freshwater for a while or you could boil it for a couple of hours. Usually drift wood found on beaches will float so you may have a hard time getting it to sink with conventional methods. After that is done give it a scrub with a brush and soak it again and you should be fine. ;)

I love the look of Cypress driftwood. I've seen some for sale on ebay. It is pretty much the only kind of driftwood that the LFS around here sell.
