I'm thinking of either buying a male Salvini or a male Convict. Which 1 of those 2 is more outgoing and swimming around instead of hiding under a rock formation or driftwood all day long.

Convict. without a question. The salvini is quickly becoming one of my favorites though. I love cons though. The common little convict can be quite a joy. The male cons hump and fins is also worth getting it over the salvini. Depending on the tank size. I would say anything under a 55 gallon I would get a convict pair. 55 gallon. I would get a pair of salvinis. Since you asked the simple question male con or male salvini though. I vote for male convict.

I have a female convict and must say that she knows no fear. She never hides and if she does she comes right out. always whipping and snapping at the glass as well as her tank mates. She even puts on a big show at my green terror which is 3 to 4 times her size, flaring out her gills and trying to intimidate him. The terror is not scared but respects the con. They sometimes quabble over live food and when she loses she goes after his dorsal fin:eek:. They are both very personable fish. I have no experience with salvinis, so I have no basis for comparison. I would have to say that my con is less shy than my green terror who scats to safety when I approach the tank, that is unless it is feeding time.

I'll say Convict too. I just got 2 convicts. They aren't shy at all. When eating time...they are first in line for food.

from what i heard, salvini's lurk in the shadows, waiting for prey

I own both a salvini and a convict, and would have to say that the convict is a little more outgoing. When I put my face near the tank, he just swims right up to me and flares his fins while he stares me down. I think its pretty cool. My salvini acts very similar but also like to hide in the shadows a bit. When feeding time comes around though, they're both out and anxiously wait for me to feed them.

in response to dbcb314, salvinis are ambush predators and "lurk" in the shadows tillt hey find their prey then pounch quite a site to see if you can see it, but in the home aquarium where feeders are not normally used it isnt seen as much, the convict would probably move around more and be more active, as opposed to the salvini.

The convict gets my vote.
Cheers.
