I am going to fully admit ignorance of what a Python is like to use or even see, but from what I understand they want to charge me a whole bunch of money for the kit that is nothing more than the parts (adapter, etc) and a cheap length of vinyl tubing.

Couldn't I just buy the parts and then go to Lowe's and get as much tubing as I want for a fraction of that price?

Not sure honestly, the T adapter for the sink is usually $8, and for a couple hose end fittings and a siphon end, you're probably looking at another $10-$12. For the tubing, I can't remember if its 1/2" or 5/8", but you'll probably get that for less than $1.00/foot. 25' kit cost me roughly $40 if I remember correctly.... so it comes close to balancing out. If you don't want the siphon end and just want to use the hose itself for siphoning (like if you have sand, then the T adapter and a hose should be all you need... which would definitely be cheaper.

Not sure what you were quoted on a Python, or what length you need, but you can get it for a good deal at PetsMart if you use their online price-matching policy.

For example, the 50' is $46 and the 75' is $55. Just go to PetsMart.com, print out their online price, and bring it into your local store to get the discount.

I'm not sure you would be able to make it cheaper, since the tubing alone would cost quite a bit.

I got a 50 foot Python for under $50. It's complete and there are no other parts to buy.

It really wasn't worth a trip to a hardware store to try to cobble one together myself. And the hour of my time spent on driving and assembling a DIY is worth a heck of a lot more than $50.

think water bed connector. i bought one then added hose to it. the one bad thing with the clear hose from lowes or what ever it folds easy and pinches. i might go with a different type of one if i ever get a new hose.

Got the same Lowe's hose for an extension to my python...same problem too. I think if I did it again I might be tempted to get the cord reinforced hose which should be sturdier.

i spent $17 dollars on my homemade one

hamster water container (garvel vacuum) $1.50
various male and female hose barbs from home depot $6.00
25' vinyl tubing $7.00
faucet adapter was $2.00 from walmart

I think I spent around $25-30 for my 25' python... problem was, I then spent a couple hours and about $3 at the hardware store with my faucet's air diffuser thingy and the python sink adapter trying to find something that would let them talk to each other (a long, tedious process that involved trying many adapters, because they weren't organized in a way that made sense to me... the hardware store guy got me started on what I was looking for...)
