Since I recently upgraded, I have a new home for my wifes angel fish, my old 55 gallon. She saw some discus at the lfs when I was buying my 100 gallon and she said she wanted them. I wouldnt mind trying my hand at keeping them, but my water is all wrong, GH 150 ppm, KH 300ppm, pH 7.2. Does anyone have any other suggestions for tankmates that would do well with angels?

Geophagus? They are beautiful/colorful. They only like to dig :) (need sandy bottom)

If you really wanna know for sure...or know what they look like...check out Jeff Rapps website. He has amazing Geophagus on sale. Hopefully, I can get a few next mouth (can't right now...just place an order there this month.) :D

I have seen a tank that has Angels and Geophagus Surinamensis living together peacefully.

If you really want to keep discus, and are really looking for some kind of challenge, then maybe you could try getting your water parimeters right. If you dont think you can then i wouldnt, just for the safety of the fish. But there is a lot of good information on how to lower your pH out there.

Log will help. One of my tank used to have high ph. After I put the log in, the ph has been stable 6.5

The driftwood acts as a acidic buffer, but depending on your KH it wont be of much help. You could use peat in your filter but that once again is not a good idea unless you change it frequently because it will eventually wear and not have an effect on the PH, which in turn lets your ph raise. Same goes for the wood, eventually it will lose its effect. A stable ph is better than a low fluctuating ph. Be sure you can keep it stable before you try and lower it. As for the tankmates. microgeophagus was a good suggestion. Along with apistos. Not to many fellow cichlids can be kept with angels.

Dont most apistos require similar water conditions to discus? Arent they just as delicate ex blue ram. What about a pair of kribensis? How would they fair?

discus are ideal tankmates for angels. they require about the same water paramteres and in the wild, discus and angels will school together. I think you water is fine for angels and discus provided you aren't trying to breed them.
good luck
:)

After posting this I read that discus are susseptable to diseases that angelfish carry, so I think I will try something else. What about severum? Will they work, I know they are on the milder side of cichlids.

I have 3 pairs of Severums, Green, Gold, and Red Face.

The most aggressive Severums I have are Red Face. If one of my fish gets too near to the Red Face, he will bite and chase the fish. My Green Severum is almost 5". He doesn't like any fish gets near his corner. If he sees any fish just 10" away...he chases that fish off. The only fish that he will not touch is the Tank Boss, my Big Blood Parrot :p However, this male Green Severum is sneaky. Sometimes he will attack my BP when his back is turned.

If you want Severum, get a female Green Severum. One is...they are colorful. And female doesn't has as much aggression as the Male. Bewarn, Severum gets to 8".

Here is my female Severum. She doesn't has much aggression. She will fight only when she is being picked.

And this is my male Severum.
