it is unreal, literally. It doesnt exist.
At least I know the front two pictures are doctored....the shadows are all wrong.

Do you like the picture of the scuba diver in the tank? Obviously doctored, and there are zero shadows to be seen. Plus the fact that a 4000 gallon tank would occupy a lot more wall space than that!
That sites been around for quite some time. I think some of the photos have been touched up but I don't think they look not real. As for size, a 4000g tank would only need to be 97.5" x 97.5" x 97.5" , or just over 8 feet cubed. As for shadows, the lights are above the diver and you can't see the bottom of the tank, where were you expecting there to be shadows?

Shadows over the rock work? Yes. Look at the position of the diver. There should be some shadows caused by him over the live rock. Also, take a look at the dimensions of the tank with the guy standing in front of it. You stated that the tank would need to be eight feet cubed. The tank sure as heck isn't eight feet tall. Assuming the man is six feet, that tank is four feet tall at most. It looks to be roughly six or seven feet wide, which would require it to be almost twenty-one feet deep (within the wall might I add) to achieve 4000 gallons.
I'm not trying to flame your post, it just looks ludicrous to claim that tank is 4000 gallons.
Edit: Looking again at the picture, it is possible that the tank is covered in parts by the masonry, but why would someone go through the trouble and expense of a 4000 gallon tank, only to make the majority of it unviewable?

I have to agree with you kreblack, why show 1/10 of your tank when you have something like that?
In the mans tank measurements (under Q&A) if you work it out he is 400 gallons off. That seems to be a lot. Also considering it is the same man beside the tank as it is inside the tank he sure has gotten a lot smaller. And is 400 lbs of live sand enough to give a 2 inch DSB in a tank 12 X 7?

the story i have from predatory fish is - yes the tank was real but the humidity in the basement warped the floor joists above it and he had to take it down or risk losing the rest of the house.

Many people have said that the tank was in fact real(I'm pretty sure there have been witnesses over on RC). Yes it was made out of masonry with an acrylic viewing window. If you go through the website you can see the chronology of the tank construction.

LOL so i started all that eh?
The tank was real. It just wasent 4000 gallons. And it only existed for about two years. The tank has since been torn down and no longer exists.

For as much as I would love a 4000 gallon tank, I dunno about having to hop in to clean the glass. I think the wetsuit was a bit much. 80 degree water will cool you down but you definantly should have time to do regular maintenance. I guess I'd be more worried about inadvertantly knocking something over. Maybe just some base rock and two dozen spadefish. That'd be cool.
He would have overheated in about 10 minutes in 80 degree water with a wetsuit on. If I am diving in water that warm the only thing to wear is a lycra suit so you don't get stung by critters. Heck I start to overheat in my 7mm suit after diving in 65 degree water.

Let me see if I understand this correctly, Slip and brianH, you guys are saying that those shots of the scuba guy are legit? I still don't buy it. How many gallons was it really?

TKOS
If you are from canada, I would imagine that 65 deg. water is a hot bath to you...... lol
If the water is not above about 78 for me, I loose my berries.
I go dry in anything below 60
I gotta say I sweat better than I shake

yea, those are legit, you cant see any shadows because the lights are directly above him, and the bottom of the tank is about 2 ft down below the glass.
Id say the approximate size of the tank is 2000-2500 gallons.

From what I've heard on other boards, yes it is real. I remember he used to even have a video of him cleaning the tank in a wet suit posted to his website. Pretty hard to "fake" a picture when its' a video.

Well, sometimes you have to eat crow. I still have trouble believing that tank was for real, but I'll take your words for it. The tank having had to be broken down after a couple of years is very credible. I can see the evaporation out of a 2000 gallon tank becoming a real problem. I wonder what he did with all of that live rock?

A nice little garden path:) Forget evaporation...think about the costs of having to keep a MH light that powerful going, and several of them for that matter!

He would have almost been better off by just putting in a skylight directly over the tank! :p
