the marine biologist down at the lfs suggests that i do some sort of medicated dip when i get my new arrivals in, not just a freshwater dip and then into QT.

what do you guys think?

I'm assuming it's a copper based dip. Depending on the fish, it could be good or bad. Some fish, such as the angels, are pretty sensitive and I wouldn't even think about it. Others, like larger groupers, dottybacks, and damsels, are hardy enough where they could probably take it. Providing that you quarantine for 4-6 weeks, I wouldn't bother with dips, fresh or medicated. You should be fine.

Yep, I prefer quarantining first. If medicating is needed, it's always an option later on. First priority for a healthy looking fish is to get them comfortable in a tank and eating. Then, observation for parasites or other health issues. I am a fan of soaking foods with garlic, as this practice has much anecdotal support for ridding fish of low level parasite infections without the use of harsh chemicals or antibiotics.

Y dip a healthy fish. You give it more stress then what it needs. Dr. dont give u med for disses u dont got (exculding vac.).

sounds good. ill go with the no dip unless they need it approach. right?

do i need to drip acclimate my incoming fish or can i pour a little water out of the bag while adding a little from the QT and then let it float in the QT? i would repeat the adding/deleting water process 4 or 5 times over 45 mins - 1 hour.

which way?

thanks,

Probably doesn't really matter. Seems to me the drip method was just more work than it was worth, so I stick to the water exchange every 20 minutes. Whatever floats yer' boat.:)

I usually acclimate fish and corals in the bag(haven't had any problems). Starfish & shrimp are another matter. Since they are sensitive to SG changes, I will normally drip acclimate. Especially starfish, I usually drip acclimate them for 2 hrs or more and test the SG of the acclimation water to make sure it exactly matches my tank before putting them in.
