:help:I'm having a very hard time determining what sex these 2 German Blue Rams are? One is wild caught and beautiful, the other was tank raised, will they cross breed? The one that's been in longer (more colorful) is chasing the newcomer (blander one) all the time. If they are both males, then how do I make sure I get a female one next? Thanks....

Don't bother. They need to be retaken. It looks like someone washes the glass with power sander. I can barely tell that it is a GBR in one of the pics...

Yeah, resize to VGA, take your new pics and repost. It's impossible to tell from the photos.

Wow relax it's one of 6 tanks I have, took the bristlenose out and most of the snails out so they don't eat the eggs! My other tanks are spotless and some algae on the side of the walls doesn't hurt anything. Just thought I'd get some constructive advice not a lecture!:mad2: I know the sides need to be cleaned but wanted to limit the stress to the new arrival and if you wait long enough the big picture resizes itself. So relax and breathe, if you can't tell from the pics just say so.

well now..
the guys/gals may be pretty hard on you..I figured it was your qt tank and those are rarely pristine.

but in terms of waiting.....just resize and post the picture.

I waited nearly 2 minutes(an eon in pc time) and the pics never downloaded..
I know a dsl doesn't have warp drive but...I was figuring the pc might time out ;)

btw, the pic didn't resize itself.

I took a look myself. Honestly, I thought these pictures were a joke or that someone ran a fresco photoshop filter on them to deliberately make them very fuzzy. Respectfully.... do you honestly believe anyone can tell what kind of fish they are let alone what gender? You may want to retake the shots and repost something that is far more clear and visible.

ok, ok settle down...not all of us can take award winning photgraphs...though I agree that they need to be MUCH more clear (clean the glass :))

from the flash, glass and a little bit of bluryness
it seems you have
first pic: male
2-3: female

cant be sure though

Last two look like males, the first may be a girl but it is too close to call.

About the first pic. That is one really skinny fish. You need to bulk him/her up big time. Try feeding New Life Cichlid pellets, frozen/thawed blood worms, mysis shrimp, and live grindal or white worms if you have cultures of them. You might also try live newly hatched baby brine shrimp.

Wild caughts can come in with lots of internal/external parasites. So,keep those temps way up - like 86. Then treat with praziquantel for flukes. (PraziPro). I'd also find some flubendazole and treat them with that. (I mix it in with food). Levimasole for camelanus worms would be a good med to have on hand as well. Contact Dr. Charles Harrison, http://www.inkmkr.com/fish and he can mail order you some of these meds with instructions on dosing.

PS They are not cave spawners, they will lay on flat rocks or the substrate.

females have a pink area on their belly and they are a little rounder there.

I know the pics were terrible, so thank you to those who tried anyways. They continue to chase eachother around and decided that they need some time in my 55 gall to mature. I now have Sparkling Gourmis and Pencilfish in my 5 gal. Thanx for the help.

You had 3 rams in a 5 gallon?!?
Yikes, I'm glad they survived. Not a good plan!

2 GBR's in a 5 gallon isn't all that bad. Would work as a great breeder tank for them. No ornaments or anything and just a sponge filter...

I imagine if you were locked in a closet with a member of the opposite sex that that would work as a breeding tank too. Will you all think of the fish? 2 rams in a 5 g is mean to the rams. If they are put in there to spawn, then removed and put back in a tank they can actually swim in, that might be fine. But keeping them in a 5 g is for those who don't care much about their fish and just want pretty things swimming around for a couple of months.

dont want to get in a debate but 5 gallons is about a foot in length...for two 3" fish thats not a whole lot of horizontal space. temp breeding, maybe, but Im not exactly sure thats what the OP had in mind. in the long run a bare 5 gal. would be much too cramped...

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

My pair of rams almost kill each other before becoming friends .... in a 20g. I was very worried for the girl. My other pair ..... chase chase ... real hunting... in another tank. Both pairs laid eggs and took good care of them for a day then they ate them.

I cannot stop laughing ..... :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Sorry.

the topic of the post said what sex are these gbrs? not "is my tank clean enough to ur standars?" or " hows my picture taking?" a simple can u take a clearer pic would have been enough. :headshake2: ANYways the first pic i would say F and second pic male, they dont get pink bellies until they are breeding , but the F pic does seem to have the blue running through the black spot as well, i guess. good luck!

Like I said, just a breeder tank. No ornaments and just a sponge filter. Wait till they breed and the fry are free swimming and eating fry food and move the parents back to a community tank.

And whoever said they were 3 inches awfully optimistic. I can't remember ever seeing a GBR that was 3 inches standard length (the caudal fin does not count)
