Is it ok to keep a school of only three, or do they need to have more for a school?

While I think that schools are technically larger than three, if there is little to no intraspecific aggression, three would be fine. I don't know enough about the aggression level of SDs, though, so I can't give a definitive answer. If they are intraspecifically aggressive, you will need more to keep one from being exclusively singled out for such behavior.
Intraspecific is one of those big words - like marmalade. Could you define it CD? (good to see you posting!)

Thanks, Steve, for the welcome!
Intraspecific = Between members of the same species
Marmalade = Not sure, but Paddington Bear loves it and it tastes all right! :)
\Mar"ma*lade\, n. [F. marmelade, Pg. marmelada, fr. marm['e]lo a quince, fr. L. melimelum honey apple, Gr. ? a sweet apple, an apple grafted on a quince; ? honey + ? apple. Cf. Mellifluous, Melon.] A preserve or confection made of the pulp of fruit, as the quince, pear, apple, orange, etc., boiled with sugar, and brought to a jamlike consistence.
Just in case there was any question.
I have three silver dollars. They hide in the corner. I have four more in QT to try and bring them out more. They are a schooling fish so the more you have the better you are.

hehehe, that's great! :)
SDs are a "the more the merrier" fish? I learn something new every day...and sometimes two things. Off to have some cookies and marmalade!
Well I'm hoping they are a "more the merrier fish". I noticed that when they swim out in the open they school tightly so I figured adding more would give them a shot of courage and help them to feel less naked.
On a side note this is a 150 gallon tank, remeber these fish get to be about the size of a salad plate so I do not recommend adding seven to just any tank.

I've found that Silver Dollars aren't too bright either...you can trick them into schooling with Tin Foil Barbs, (I've seen this with 2 different fish in 2 different tanks, on many occasions.)
My two Tin Foil Barbs brought my Silver Dollar out of hiding in about a week... it was noticible too, you could really tell he didn't know the difference.
