View Full Version : LR question
I don't keep saltwater tanks but my brother does. I was figuring that on my next scuba outing I would see if I could find some nice interesting LR for him. Just some smaller pieces or so. I was going to get them from shallower water (nothing deeper than 20 feet or so). My big concern is that the water around these parts at that depth is going to be 60F at the best of times. His tank is kept at around 78F. We were going to cure the rock in saltwater filled buckets.
How long should these be cured? Will the creatures in them die anyway do to the eventual temp change and if so should they be cured at higher temps? Any other things that you can think of?

I doubt anything would survive in such a different temperature. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, but just about every specie on the rock up there will be different then what you find in Equatorial regions. If anything I guess, you could just bleach it out and make some quality base rock. As I said before though, someone please correct me if you think otherwise. It's a good question though.
So if we place these rocks in a bucket of saltwater and add a heater there should be plenty of die off and the rock might cure. Anything left after a week or so would be able to survive the tank.
Just thinking out loud. Any thoughts?

Kind've. But I'd give it something closer to a month or 6 weeks and do water changes every 5 or 6 days.

I would also recommend finding out if it's illegal to take anything out of the waters in your area. I live in Florida and there is a long list of things you can and can not take, and in what quantity, from the Gulf of Mexico.
It would suck to get your boat stopped and have them find something that your not supposed to have, and get fined.

No rules about taking rocks out of the water in Nova Scotia. Hence all of the crappy folk art sculptures that everyone makes and sells. Of course if you come here as a tourist then I suggest that you buy some of our fine folk arrt sculptures.
