Just picked up a ViaAqua 750 for my 55g. I have always used 2 HOBs for my tank, but decided to consolidate to 1 outlet (never enough outlets). Anyways, I have never used a canister so trying to figure out the optimum media for it. Currently I have 2 media bags filled with carbon in the bottom tray, Seachem Matrix in the middle and floss in the upper tray. I was wondering opinions on this configuration. BTW, the bioload is pretty high, it is housing a 6" Red Devil and a pleco that is also quite large. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks

Are you saying ditch the trays and just fill halfway with something such as bioballs or scrubbers and then top with several layers of floss?

well devilish after 43yrs in the hobby i just bought my first canister last week.a marineland c-220.im using 2 sponges in the bottom..then eheimmech..then eheim substrat..and finaly some more eheim mech with a polishing pad to top it off.allwet......

Thanks for all the help. I guess I'll have to go out buy sponge for it since that is something I did not get. Are the body scrubbers suitable (loofahs?)? Can get those 5 for $1. As far as maintenance goes, weekly cleanings or does it just depend? Thank you again.

im not familiar with your filters but re canister filters i doubt if you would want to clean it weekly.im sure it can go longer than that without cleaning.i've heard some people dont clean their canister for several months and some have went up to six months without cleaning them.

guess it depends on your tank conditions etc.have fun.allwet....ps not sure about body scrubbers??? but filter floss or something like blue bonded filter pad or something equivalant will work if no sponges are available.

bottom- Bio Rings Middle- coarse sponge top- floss Seems to work good for me on my planted tanks. For heavy bioload I would up the bio filtration.

Sorry, wasnt planning on substituting sponge with the scrubbers, but the bioballs or pot scrubbers Mgamer suggested
