ive never had black gravel, i was thinking of getting the really fine substrate gravel in black, does any1 know if it tends to turn brown from algea growth?

black is a good choice a darker color gravel tends to not stress the fish as much. but a really fine grain gravel probably will get algae growth on it and if it's as fine as sand then it will get sucked out when you siphon it.

Here are some pictures of my tank (http://members.tripod.com/njdevilsfan130/pictures.htm). I have Onyx sand made by Seachem and I love it.

Ive got black sand in almost all of my tanks....no brown algae on it!!
only with my white sand has that happened.

As for cleaning using a siphon......it's like a fine art...but once you get used to it, it's usually okay and you tend to NOT suck up sand. Just takes some getting used to.
