ive never had black gravel, i was thinking of getting the really fine substrate gravel in black, does any1 know if it tends to turn brown from algea growth?

it doesn't matter what color gravel you have..if conditions are such to allow brown algae..the gravel will go brown. (unless also you don't have little critters eating it up)

I have black sand, does that count?

I haven't noticed any discoloration of the sand, but then again maybe I don't have diatoms in my tank (high lighting levels)

The only thing bad about black gravel is that most everything shows up on it, the slightest little turd to any uneaten food.

Dark gravels and sand give the best contrast. This helps to bring out the colors of fish and plants. Also, IMO, black backgrounds look the best...

Color won't matter much when it comes to algae problems.

I have a black trimmed aquarium, black sand and a black background :) looks pretty sweet

Maybe I'll take some pics soon

yeh i didnt think here would be any issues , except for the turds/uneaten food. thanks everyone.
