I'm a big fan of tiger lotuses. it's a bulb plant rather than a floater but it sends up leaves to float on the surface and provides pretty good cover.

Come to think of it, why don't I have any tiger lotuses in my tank. I pulled out mine a good long while ago when my tank was severely overgrown and my bichir was having trouble getting around because of the plants blocking his way.

anyway. it's a good plant I got my bulbs at wal mart. they grow pretty fast.

Indian fern is a good one. Have some in all my tanks. I use some in the substrate and some as floaters. It's pretty cool watching the cories swim through it.

Thanks all. Malken...I have some Tiger Lotus in another tank and am waiting for it to send out some longer stems.

I'd be a bit worried about putting the duckweed type of plant in..doesn't it go mad and take over?

Yuk. Forget that then!
Grannylvsfish....can't help you with where to get the Tiger Lotus unless you fancy a trip to the UK! Malken said Walmart in his post. Is that any good to you?

my walmart stinks for anything any more as far as fish are concerned and plants. in fact they are revamping the store pet department :(

shirlz how big is this tank?
tiger lotus is great but it can get crazy real fast, I got one in the 29g and it has like 17+ Gigantic leaves and more on the way.
I would rather go with pennywort, since it doesnt block the light much and provides some protection.
You can also try riccia, Anacharis, hornwort, guppy grass.

I agree with granny on the pennywort. It doesnt spread quite like duckweed. It keeps growing longer and can be trimmed down easily.
