Just thought I'd share this story with you guys. My husband and I built a 400 gallon pond in our back yard. Shortly after this, my sister-in-law and her husband just HAD to have a pond. So they built one, stocked it, didn't clean it and decided this summer that they wanted fewer fish.
We brought home about 20 fish and they have grown and thrived. Two days ago, they decided they didn't want any fish. So they brought over another 30 or so. Funny thing is, the first batch we got is about 3 times the size of what we got Sunday. Boy it makes a difference when you feed and care for your fish.
Anyway, the bad news is that within 1 day, 4 of the new fish got sucked into the filter and died. There isn't any apparent disease, they just didn't seem to have the strength to escape the pull of the filter. Hopefully the rest grow and thrive the way the first batch has!
Just wanted to share.

free fish is great what kind are they because you might be over crowding the pond if its just 400 gallons.

We think they're whatever is most common. When I fed them this morning though, it looked like several more were gone.

The filter system is having a hard time keeping up with the fish waste, stop feeding for a few days

Consider adding something like Prime to detox the ammonia and nitrites. Add some salt too, up to 0.1% concentration which is 400 teaspoon in 400 gallons, something like 8 cups. Dissolve it in pond water before adding to the pond.

Test the water for ammonia and nitrite, you are probably back into a cycle and the new fish are super stressed by it. Stressed fish get sick, sick fish infect well fish, it is a nasty business.
