Is this possible? Is anybody using a slim filter that would cut it in 3" of space?

Some where there is a page that lists the measurements of lots of different filters...A member who is not sto active any more wrote it up, but I can't find it.
However, I think there are a few options, depending on what size tank you have. The AquaClears 200 would work, but only for a tank smaller than about 20 gallons. Best bet--grab a tape measure, or go peruse through the LFS.

Actually, I just found the following page - maybe this will help someone else:

Here's a great page that lists dimension of many popular filters:

By the way, does anyone know what happened to ChannelCat?

ChannelCat is still around, though infrequently. He is active on several non-fish boards. I spoke with him a few months back, and he's doing well, just not really focusing on aquariums when he is online.

Thanks for the replies - if anyone is interested... I happened to be in Walmart (I know, ugh, walmart) and saw that they carry a Whisper "Advanced" power filter. I grabbed the one that is rated at 300 gph - it is about 2 3/4 inches wide and easily fits on the 1 1/4 rim of my 120gal tank. I am currently running two eheim prof cannisters on this tank, but was interested in having something else for surface agitation and easy media access should the need arise - this thing fit the bill perfect for minimal clearance between tank and wall. I would be interested to know if anyone has any positive or negative comments about these filters. I haven't seen the "Advanced" series whisper anywhere but walmart...

Like some earlier people mentioned, penguins will work.
I have a penguin 170 and just measured, 2-7/8" from back of glass to the wall behind it.

Of the big three HOB manufacturers, Whisper makes the narrowiest width filter box.
