is $25 for a 24" Hagen GLO 24wx2 a good deal?

I came across what I think may be a real deal. Let me know what you think.

A local big box pet store (Pet something something) is selling the Hagen GLO T5HO light systems.
The 24" double light (24w x 2) is selling at $25.

The 36" single light (39w) is going at the same price.

I think this is some error on their part. The 24" single and the 36" double are going for much more than either of these.

None of these include the bulbs with the purchase.

So, considering the value of the product, is this a good buy?

I'm looking at lighting a 29 gal (29x12x18) and a 30 gal (36x12x16) as planted tanks. Any other thoughts or recommendations?

I agree, deals like that rarely come by.

good to know!

I've checked different locations of the same chain, but it seems there is just the one that has priced these lights so low. I suspect that it is a pricing error.

I picked up the 24w x 2 and with your input, I will go back and get the 36", 39w light tonight, if it is still there. I was hoping to find another 24w x 2, since it would give me more light than the 39w. I think both will give the 30 gallon a chance to do well as a medium light, planted tank.

I'm thinking of going for the gold and talking to the store manager and asking him/her what the story is and see if the price on the 39w x 2 can go as crazy low, but I am concerned that bringing attention to the issue will lead to a price change.

I also wonder if they will restock the lights once they are bought. I am sure that they do not sell many. Maybe they are planning on not carrying them anymore. hmmmm... maybe I can call another store site and ask that question....

I'll post again to let you know how it turns out.

Thanks!

I think the store you're referring to is PetsMart. I've seen the same price gap at this one. These GLO fixtures don't come with a bulb so you'll have to spend a little extra for it.

Yes I got my 36" there also it was on clearance but they wanted 136.99 for the double weird huh? Maybe they are having a hard time selling singles 36" and double 24"? Doesn't make sense!

I talked with a manager at PetSmart

I went in yesterday to pick up a 36" GLO for a new tank. I asked about the pricing. Everyone there seemed surprised; no one knew why they were priced the way they were.

The fact that this was new information to them is evidence to me that they are just not selling many.

Eventually, I talked to the store manager. He had no idea either, but a check with the price scan gun and a call to some regional muckity muck showed that though PetSmart had only begun carrying these lights in February, the corporate decision has been made to stop carrying them because they are not selling.

The manager said he could not change the price of the higher cost lights; he said that price changes happened at the corporate level. He did encourage me to check back, though, because his little price gun, "had three stars," on it which apparently means the non-discounted lights would get a price drom very soon, too.

As a side note, the store has also stopped carrying all glass tank lids. The manager said that he gets complaints pretty regularly on that issue.

He said they've stopped carrying ALL lights and lids and a number of tank sizes. I don't know about you, but I have noticed that their tank shelves are looking a bit bare...

It makes me wonder if, once the items in stores are all sold off, PetSmart will introduce a new group of products, maybe something like a PetSmart brand of lights and lids, etc. O

In any case, now is apparently a great time to get some of this stuff on clearance prices...

BTW- that 24w x 2 light on a 29 gal tank... I've had a DIY CO2 on it and the plants are busy pearling O2 and growing like WILD!! However, the algae is also enjoying the fun in the sun. I am reducing my light time from 10 to 8 hours/day, added 3 SAE and an amano and will watch the CO2 and be ready to recharge the generator when it's needed. the 39w x 1 light is on a 30 gal I picked up on freecycle (Freecycle ROCKS!) that I am cycling.

If you can't tell, I am enjoying the hobby!
