My LFS recently got in a gold stripe cardinal fish. It is about three inches long, torpedo shaped, and pretty stout. It is silvery with a gold stripe running down the lateral line. I really like the fish, but my reading isn't coming up with anything about it.

Does anyone know about this fish? What it eats, how it behaves, bad habits, etc.?

do you know the latin name? your LFS should know it, a lot of the wholesale places they by from will include it on the packing list along with the common name (I worked at a LFS for a while).

Gold Stripe Cardinals aren't a new species and aren't really rare, but they just aren't collected very often because there is not much demand for them. I find them to be absolutly gorgeous, but just don't have the tank for them currently. They act just like the Bangaii and PJ Cardinal even though they are a bit longer. They grow to about 4 inches and might touch smaller ornamental shrimp when adult. They are very peaceful (as with all cardinals). I don't know if you have it but the Pocket Guide to Marine Fish by Scott Michael has a whole sheet just about them. I would tell you more about it from the book but I just moved up to college yesterday, and left my book at home. So, anyway, hope this helps.

Having three different breeds of cardinals, they all behave differently. The bangaiis are very territorial.Mine chases away my 4 inch blue streak damsel. These fish are not afraid of any other fish.Very cool fish.
My two pyjamas are very peaceful except with eachother.Funny thing is that although they really don't get along, they always hang out together.
My flame cardinal is aggressive.Flat out.He runs at the pyjamas and head butts them.Too funny because the pyj. are twice his size. The flame will engorge himself with food so that nobody else can have any.I'm really glad I added him. He's hilarious. My four stripe damsel has declared him a mortal enemy and will occasionally tail whip him, even though he is about one fifth the size of the flame.
I obtained all my cardinals very small and they are all maxed out in size(4 inches). They eat flake and raw shrimp with an occasional feeder fish.
Anyone thinking of a new addition into a peaceful community tank, would love a cardinalfish.
They really are beautiful animals.

I can't find a scientific name for the fish, and my LFS is unable to provide me with one. Thank you MSL and Triggerman, for the info on this guy. I really like him, I was just worried about aggression problems. Will he have a problem with my cleaner shrimp? My pseudochromis hates the shrimp, and takes every opportunity to try and bite him, despite the fcat that the shrimp is a full two inches bigger than he is! I just don't want two fish ganging up on the shrimp.

If the cleaner shrimp has any considerable size to him ,the cardinals will leave it alone.
Before I got rid of my last mantis shrimp,my one pyjama cardinal used to spot him and rush the hole where the mantis was.
Too bad he never got him.
Would've loved that.

What feeder fish would you put in with a 4 inch cardinal?
