I bougt two adult fish known as a Mighty Might. Apparently they were common in the 80's and have since gotten less common in the hobby. The person I bought them from got them 5 years ago. Anyone know the scientific name or head of these?
Thanks

Mighty mites, referring to their size. I've heard the name attached to Pseudotropheus demasoni before. They're from Lake Malawi in Africa. Blue with black stripes, very aggressive for their size. Fairly small, about 4" and males and females all look the same to me. They don't seem as common as they used to, but I just bought 4 more the other day to add to my colony, so they do show up in the shops still.
Of course if it's something else, then I've got no idea what you have. I've never heard that name used for any other species.

Not bad, I previously posted without seeing the pictures. I think they're Pseudo. demasoni.

Thats not a demasoni that paradigm posted. Looks more like a Cynotilapia afra or Ps Elongatus of some sort, but Im not entirely sure. But its definitely not a Ps demasoni.
this is a demasoni...

Nope, not a Demasoni since I have a couple of those. I also have afra's and I don't think he is on of them either. He is pretty big, upwards of six to seven inches and wide. I was told that he could possibly be a "pure" Zebra, whatever that means...
Thanks

I think C. afra are even less likely. The caudal fin does look odd for a demasoni, but paradigm said they were old fish, I figured that could make them look different from what I'm used to seeing in shops. The dorsal fin looks right with the bands running through them.
Once again, Mighty Mite is definitly a common name for demasoni, which points out why common names suck. Too much confusion.
Clearer pictures would probably help too.

You're right about them not being demasoni then, they don't get that big.

I don't know if you guys remember any really popular african cichlids from the 80's, but according to the guy I purchased this guy from that is when he was really popular. The fish in the pic is fry from a generation or two from the 80's. The man said that you really can't find this fish around LFS anymore.... Don't know if that is true or helps....

Very little yellow at the end of his tail, not much at all. The pic doesn't show this well, but his color between the dark horizontal lines is very, very light.

His throat is a very dark yellow and he has large lips. His pectoral fins are jet black. Not sure if the pic shows this stuff...

You can see the yellow in the 5th picture.

I don't really know, he isn't as blue between his black horizontal marks. Do mpanga have a yellow throat, couldn't tell from the pic. Also the yellow is only on his throat, besides a bit at the end of his tail.
Thanks

PIC 2 shows his throat really well. I think if we can nail down a yellow throat on the mpanga we'll know whether it is or isn't that sort of fish.
Thanks

In the 5th pic it looks like yellow in the dorsal too.

I'm looking at mpanga and they seem to have much more yellow than my fish and no yellow on their throats. Maybe I'm not finding the right pics...

Verse, now that I look at your original pic, it looks very similar to mine, the only doubts I have are the throat...

I think it may be a Long Fin Zebra.
