I have had a pair of golden wonder killifish in my planted tank for a while now(almost a year), anyway over the last month or so my male is beginning to develp what look like cateracts on his eyes. There is nothing on the outer lense but when looked at closely I can see white discolouration of the black pupil. He still gets about a bit and him and the missus still breed like crazy but he is having trouble seeing food(I have to drop it right near his mouth).

Is there anything I can do?Does anyone know the lifespan of these fish?I know these ones are not true annual fish so I expected them to live for at least a few years.Btw the female is fine and I also have some of their babies growing on too.

Thanks

Check your water parameters (pH, nitrate, nitrite, amonia, etc.)

I would do a 20-25% water change after your tests just as a precaution.

Try searching for information about "cloudy eye" as that may be what your fish have.

Good luck!

*edit* I don't think killi fish have a long projected life span. Look for some info on your specific species.

See that the thing, my water tests are fine.I have had fish with cloudy eye/pop eye before and this is different.

I can post a pic if that helps.

I had a 6-7 inch goldfish with the same thing. His eyes were totally white, just like people with cataracts. He did just fine and he lived to be about 10-12 years old. He had no problems eating as he would just start swallowing along the water surface as soon as he heard me open the lid to the tank. In the summer, he lived in my outdoor pond where he was able to graze on plants and algae constantly. The bonus was that he never bothered the smaller goldfish that I put in with him because he never saw them! I believe that animals adapt better to new situations than humans do, so hang in there!:)

Heres a couple of pics, I know you cant see exactly whats wrong but you get the idea.

This is his good side(only a little bit white).

My goldfish was far worse than that. You could hardly see the pupil. He was like that for the last 6 years and as I have said, he did just fine. You probably have nothing to worry about.
