My goldfish have gone insane!
They are always hiding, and they never used to be like that!
What causes fish to act wierd like that?

Where is their tank/pond located?
They are in a 10 Gallon tank, coldwater, sitting on a coffee table in the living room. My girlfriend confessed to tapping on the glass a few times but she said she hasnt done it in ages.
The fish do sometimes (rarely) come out from behind the ornament/fake plants but if anything moves close to the tank, the run back and hide.
They werent like that until a few weeks ago, they were quite happy.
I'm really worried, what could be wrong?

Hiding or just not coming to see you when you walk by? I ask this because I can give you a definite answer for the latter...

Goldfish Girl, Stress Coat isn't really for that...it's for if their slime coat is depleted more than anything else and is usually only added during water changes.
They are hiding all the time when I'm around, I dont know about when I'm not around because I dont have CCTV cameras watching them. but if I sit still long anough, far away enough (ie watch tv in the other end of the room) they slowly start coming out. But they do come out when I feed them.

They must just be wild ones, I guess...?
I doubt that it's anything stressful or disease-related by your description, Deniz.

duh!
I know that!
They're wild rebels and they go behind the rocks n plants and do naughty things back there. No wonder I took'em out of the community tank and gavem their own, they're bad news! :p

I'll leave you two to your repartee...
Interestingly enough, there is no "wild-type" for goldfish as they were created from the Crucian Carp (Carassius carassius) and artificially evolved to their current specific status (C. auratus). Fun fact for tonight! :)

Fish can be wierd like that. Give them time to settle in & shake off their shyness.

How many goldfish do you have in your 10 gallon tank. If you have more than 1 it is overcrowded. 1 per 10 - 20 gallons of water would be good. I would think that the are stressed. I know I made the same mistake when I first started with my goldfish tank.

I don't have a 10 gallon tank anymore. I gave the goldfish to my in-laws for their outside pond and the fish are doing great. They have grown about 30 times their size since they were in the tank.
