I've been pricing the CPR Aquafuge hang-on refug and found the medium size for 119.00. After pricing acrylic, weld-on, pumps, fittings etc., it will probably cost about 80.00 to make. I figure it's just better to buy one. Anyone with experience on these??
If I fill it with macroalgae, do you think my nitrate battle will subside??
I also need a cpoepod area for my mandarin, even though he eats Spectrum pellets.
Typically have 20-30ppm even with 10% weekly water changes.
I have a 75gal FOWLR, about 6 months old with healthy fish/inverts.
Any help is appreciated.

I'm struggling with the nitrates too and am trying to add a fuge which SHOULD help. I'm hearing that each pound of LR you have can only reduce Trates by 2-3ppm per day. I have heard WONDERFUL things about that fuge and may get it later this summer. In the meantime, i bought one of those plastic boxes the LFS uses to transfer fish into your bag and will be drilling holes in it this week. I'll put a bunch of cheato in it and see if that helps. Keep us updated on your progress. What does your CUC look like?

My CUC is small. 2 or 3 hermits, emerald crab, CB shrimp, 1 mex. turbo snail, 1 trochus snail, 2 aastrea snails, 3 nassarius snails and a common brown urchin. The tank is 75 gal with 20 lbs LR.
I run a Magnum 250 with bio-wheel, Penguin 300 with 2 small bio-wheels, skimmer and 2 Maxi-jet 900 PH.
The substrate is about 3/4 CC and 1/4 sugar sized sand. The sand covers only the right side of the tank and the nassarius snails are buried there.
Fish include large yellow tang, green chromis, 3-stripe damsel, long-nosed hawk, oscillaris clown and lemonpeel angel.
I 'm eliminating the single bio-wheel for the refugium. I believe they are my nitrate issues because I swirl the CC weekly during water changes.
I guess I'll see soon.

I bought two from aquatraders.com. I would much rather have a sump style. The only thing they seem to be good for is raising pods (which is why I got them). I have a small fuge on my 55 reef and a large one on my 150. The large one started leaking (to much weight on the pipes, one of them broke). If you are going to get one, get as big as possible, they don't hold much at all. Sorry I can't help you with whether or not it lowered the trates, they were low when I got them.
