Is it generally between 8 to 10 hours? Or a more specific timing?

I have been going 9 - 9, but am starting to cut back a bit. I think 10 hours is a better photo period, especially now since one of my tanks is experiencing algae issues.
I find that it really doesn't matter a great deal how long the lights are on when my tanks are in balance. Everything just takes care of itself as long as I'm consistent with the ferts. Pressurized CO2 makes it easier to keep that end consistent, but the tank that's got the algae problem went through a bunch of changes recently and I'm now fighting the result.

The go on at 10:35ish and off at like 9:01. I have it set for 11 to 9, but I can't really get it exact with this mechanical timer wit the stupid pins. I think I am going to get a digital one very soon.

NJ Devils Fan - LOL! Fun with pins!! I have 3 timers, 1 for each tank, all with the pins, all supposedly set for 9 to 11 as well. I sit in the basement typing and hear them go click - click - click at about 5 minute intervals.

10-11hrs.
Hey, for the cheap person inside you, less hours = less heat and less electrical cost. It does not result in worse/less growth than 12 -14 etc.
Save a buck or two.
