I have a slight algae problem in my 35 gallon aquarium. I recently tore it down and set it up with an organic substrate (some peat and topsoil) with a layer of sand on top.
The plants are growing very well so far; here are the conditions:
pH: 8.3
Temp: ~76F
KH: 17-18
GH: 16-17
NH3: 0ppm
NO2: 0ppm
NO3: 0ppm*
PO4: no kit yet
CO2: DIY
Lighting: 120W NOF (~3.4WPG)

*I did a 40% water change last Tuesday and tested for nitrates on Wednesday. The reading then was about 5ppm, but since then it has gone down to zero.

I was thinking it seemed obvious that I should add some nitrates to my aquarium, since there may be an imbalance between phosphates and nitrates. I was wondering if you guys agree with me on that.

Thanks,
Graeme
