I recieved an emperor 400 today from a member on another board. I had to put it on my 23 gallon until I can pick my penguin 330. I thought I read on here somewhere that the lowest flow setting was only for when youre feeding the fish and can damage the filter if left that way. Anyone know anything about this?

I dont see how limiting the flow can damage the filter..if it had a built in flow reduction thing especially. But then i cant tell you for sure, I have not read anything to say that these filters can be damaged this way or that they cannot but it seems illogical that they would be.
just dont sue me if it does break! :D

I don't think it will damage anything. Mine is noisier than heck on the lowest setting, but it seems to run fine. I've accidentally left it there for a day or two and it didn't seem to damage anything.

mine makes a horrible sound...like it's guzzling up a lot of air...when i put it on the lowest setting. if youre going to run a 330 on that tank, what's the hurt in running the 400 for a little while? put something in the middle of the tank to break up the fast water flow a bit, and you're fish will just get a little extra workout.

Thats what I was worried about, the noise. Seems like it has to work harder or something (which doesnt make sense since the setting is the lowest). My emperor 280 sounds like that almost all the time though so its probably not hurting it.

The reason I dont want it on full flow is because of the gourami, she didnt seem to like all the current. By the time I get the 330 she probably wont be in the tank anymore.

well the other option i offered was putting something in the tank. a clean milk jug or the like would probably work. it would break up the heaviest currents flowing out of the 400.

instead fo lowest setting how about trying for somewhere inbetween high and low. shouldn't be as noisy not not as much flow as high.

my 400 makes some sort of awful noise whenever it's not set to max. at max, it runs smooth and awesome, but otherwise, it's terrifying and evil.

not too mention they can be a pain in the #$% to get primed sometimes.
