I started out with a UGF and it worked for about 3 months then i started noticing that i had nitrates in the tank and it wasn't at all what it was like at the start. My opinion would be a deep sand bed(DSB). Very affective i just put one in my tank. The bonuses are the look: looks a lot better the white sand looks like the ocean. And the bio filtration you will get. What you need for a DSB is get some aragonite or silica based sand pour it in using a PVC pipe, then add some livesand to that and ur all set. A recommended sand to use is Southdown play sand from homedepot.
I used pool filter sand worked good. Have fun the switch is worth it

Heres a link to do the switch or put it in

Actually I here that the silica based sand is not too good because diatoms use the silica (silicate) to form their shells and you might get a diatom algea bloom.

Just a thought. :)

the glass on your tank will grow more diatoms than the sand would.

besides, diatoms are good for your tank. many corals, inverts, and fish eat them.
