Here is my idea, take 2 canister filters; let's say, 2 XP3 filters. Instead of having 2 intakes and to outtakes in the tank, how about linking the 2 together?? You would start with one filter and run the intake from the filter to the tank. Then cut a small section of the hose and connect the outtake of the first filter to the intake of the 2nd filter the run the outtake of the 2nd to the tank. You would want to be able to turn them on the same time, so put them on a power strip or extension cord. The only problem I might see is that if one were to fail, the the other would be pushed to hard to compensate and prolly burnout quickly. But, it might make an interesting experiment for someone. Just an idea I cooked up!! Might be even better than a sump filter.

The power does not add that way. The first one creates a certain amount of outlet pressure. Feed that presure into the suction of the next and one of them will probably stall. I bet you get less flow than one alone. I'm just guessing, let me know how it wokrs out.

the second canister pump motor is not designed to run at the rpms needed to add to the pressure made by the first.... actually for that to work both would have to run faster to make the gph more than the amount one can push through its intake and output tubes

if it did work wouldn't you only be going the max that 1 filter can take in and if you had a filter that was working right you wouldnt have anything for the second filter to filter.

It was just a thought. I had an idea it wouldn't work anyhow. I wouldn't even try it! Thanks anyways!!!

I know people daisy chain pumps, so the question would be if it works well with the backpressure caused by the canisters.

I hate to resurrect such an old thread but this is something I've been pondering for the past few years so when I came across this, I was amazed to see it discussed! :)

With a Fluval you can adjust flow rate with the grey lever on it. Put the first pump at what the intake you want, say 75 g/ph...take the 2nd and put it at about 150 g/ph. Not sure on the math. May be you would want them to stay the same through out. Eh. You would have to measure outflow of first and make sure the intake on the 2nd could handle it, wether it was too low or too high without causing a stall or burning it up. Intresting thought. Don't have the cash to throw at it though.

are you talking about linking filters together??
its nothing unusuall...
i know a guy that has eheim 2211 and 2213 for his 6gallon tank..
it takes space but heres how it goes:

the only way i would even try to set something like that up is to run the first filter with mech only and the second for bio only then it would be a lot less cleanings.
