I have a question about a pair of Dwarf Gouramies. Sometimes they are fine with each other, some times they will chase each other around nipping at fins, and occasionally they will get side by side (heads by the other's tail) and wiggle there tail fins like they are doing some kind of dance.

Do you think they may be a male and female getting ready to breed or is it something territorial?

They are in a 20gal. tank. One of them is just a bit larger than the other and is slightly lighter colored and when they see each other they fan there fins out similar to what a betta does when it spots another male betta.

If they are male and female I may put them in a 10gal. to see if they will breed sometime this winter.

thanks

Ive never kept dwarf gouramis, but it sounds like they are getting ready to breed. Im not 100% sure but if it was aggresion they wouldnt be side by side wiggling there fins.

Do they both look like this? Females are almost silver.

Female:

no, they are almost completely red with blue iridescence on the top and bottom fins and a blueish silver around head and gills.

pet depot called them dwarf flame gouramies, i found this pic on the net and it looks just like them.

The female flame gourami will be silver as well. If both are red, then you have two males.

thanks for the help. i guess ill let them chase each other around since neither of them is really more dominant over the other, and so far i havent noticed any damaged fins or wounds.
