View Full Version : Rocks against back?
I've heard many people 'poo'poo' putting your LR against the back of the glass/tank, but I've seen many reef tanks where the rocks are all placed against the back with rocks coming out from that in the corners, etc.
What's the deal with rock placement?
Thanks!

Stacking rock towards the middle allows for better circulation, better light distribution and can look more natural. If you dive or watch anything on reefs with under water shots, you will see groupings of rocks/ corals, not generally a wall. Narrow tanks make this more difficult, if not impossible. It also makes it much easier to clean as it allows you to vacuum detritus from behind everything.

I live in California (the land of rock & roll), I put the rocks against the back wall or they may fall during one of our earthquakes. :(

Agree with the above^
It's tricky for me in terms of stacking of any kind because I have a Snowflake Moray Eel who LOVES to hide in caves and stir the sand up from under him/her so it's just bare glass. So anything I create has a chance of being shifted due to it's movement, so it's been better for me to stack it against the back rather than a teetering mess in the middle. Ugh! nothing i do is really eel proof and I LOVE my eel, so I'll just have to fiddle with it I guess.

Mine is stacked against the back and part of the sides. I have a secret powerhead hidden behind to alow good flow, plus there are quite a few gaps, caves and holes etc. Yes, I can't clean the back and sides very well but they're also not that visible because of the way i have the tank - between a wall and a piano!

Personal preference, I suppose. Actual coral reefs are often wall-like formations, and some of the more memorable diving destinations I've experienced have been "Wall dives". Build it the way you like it.
