I have used both, and have never seen a problem. But there's always a risk if you get something that's not tested to be safe in aquaria.

I was wanting to enlarge the sump in my tank (while I have it emptied) to house my skimmer, I was going to put a small sump on the opposite side to house power heads (keep them hidden). I was going to run to home depot, and pick up some regular silicone if it will work without harm. Will a regular silicone bottle say something about aquaruim safe? What type did you use?
There are "aquarium specific" silicones out there, but any product that is 100% pure silicone should work fine - just need to avoid the ones with anti-mildew additives and things like that.

I just purchased 100% silicone that is food safe..... I bet that would have anti mildew addatives though.
