I stopped in at a different PetSmart today and was surprised to find a pretty nice selection of plants. Was shocked. Anyway, I wound up picking up a couple different varieties. Still researching two of them. I got two bunches of each.

Cabomba
Frill
I believe the other was called Scarlet Temple

They all have lead weights on them. So first question:

Should I seperate the stems and plant in sand subsrate or leave the weights on for now?

Second question:

Anyone have info on the last two (Frill and Scarlet Temple)?

Third:

Cabomba flowers? I have what appears to be flowers on a couple of stems....interesting.

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Ive heard Alternanthera called red temple before. prob the same thing as Scarlet temple.

Frill is most likly Myriophyllum simulans or pinnatum

Either way Plantgeek.net will have info on them

also

When i get plants from a lfs i pluck off dead bits, swish them in a bucket of tank water, remove the weights, and then plant.

Unless there is a problem with the plants staying in the substrate just remove the weights

Cabomba does very well with high light and CO2. In those conditions it's basically a weed. I have what appear to be flower buds on the stems of mine too, but they haven't developed into anything. They may only flower above water but I'd have to double check this. What kind of lighting do you have on the aquarium?

Planting in sand is easier than in gravel. If you're planting them in the aquarium with the goldfish (in your profile) you might have trouble keeping them down without the lead weights. I understand goldfish have a knack for munching on live plants and disturbing them before they take root. Separate the stems into groups of three or four and plant them in the sand to a depth of 1-1.5". Then move some sand back around the stems to help keep them down.

I have no idea what "Frill" is but I have a feeling that "Scarlet Temple" is some form of Alternanthera, which prefers high light as well. For a quick plant reference, check out www.tropica.com.

Still searching around. I did find some info on frill. This scarlet temple is different from some I've seen on the net. The one I have has long pink leaves. What I've found on searching show short leaves.

These are going in a different tank from goldy. I would like to put live plants in there with him evenually. I have some amazon swords and red wendti (hope I spelled that right) that I am going to try in there when I'm done scaping it. Need some sand to help keep a piece of driftwood down. ;o)

The tank that I did put them in is under high light (>2wpg) and CO2. I'm hoping they do well. Really like the bushy look of cabomba.

after years of pulling the weights off bunch plants and reading everything i can find i have decided to leave them on till the plants are well rooted even if they are lead ( which most are not) your water changes will cancel out any leaching that may have occured
