white oily film on water top

My SW tank is 8 months old now and the other day i had some white oily film ontop of the water that even had some stuff floatingin it...kinda like muck on top of the water, i stirred it up good and the filter suckedit all in a got rid of it.. it had some consistancy to it kinda thick thats y the filter was able to get rid of it..but now i see it coming back the top of the water is just starting to get oily and white... any ideas???

Do you have a protein skimmer?

I concur with Guy. If you don't already have a protein skimmer, get one. My tank got that same sheen on top of the water several months ago. I began skimming and the sheen became no more. My nitrates also went down by half, which is always a good thing. :D
