I went the Ace Hardware down the street to get some ammonia to start the fishless cycle, but I noticed that it contains 10% ammonia hydroxide. It has no perfumes in it, so I think it should be good for cycling, but I'm just afraid it will harm my tank. I've invested so much money over the last week that I got be certain before I start.

Are you concerned about the concentration? Or the possibility of other unwanted chemicals (surfactants, etc.)?

If the bottle is labeled 'pure ammonia', or 'clear ammonia', and the label doesn't list any other contents... I say go for it.

Good luck with your fishless cycle!

I'm worried about whether or not it contains any other additives.

If you can't be sure based on what's written on the label, you might want to find a different brand... just to be on the safe side.

However... you can also try shaking the bottle. If it suds/foams then it definately has extra stuff you don't need.

Also, this guy (http://forums.fishindex.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20395&highlight=ACE) seemed to do well with the generic ACE hardware ammonia... sounds like the same stuff you have.

Cheers,

Very cool. I also searched the internet long and hard and found someone else that said that Ace hardware brand is reported to work. I also read though that some conditioners are no good for fishless cycling. I got the Aquasafe stuff and it makes note that it will not remove ammonia from an uncycled tank.

Many thanks,
Heath
