I have read a lot of posts from people who say that the sound of bubbles, pumps and falling water is annoying to them. I find the sounds soothing and comforting. I have a tank in all rooms of my house save the bathrooms and kitchen. I actually find it a bit disturbing when I go away and those background sounds are absent. As for the sound in the bedroom, I find it difficult to sleep when away because I miss those sounds. Do you folks really find the noise that bothersome? Is there no one else who misses or enjoys these sounds? Just a bit of curiosity here on my part. I live near a small airport and I do not hear the planes but all my visitors seem to. Later.

I like the sound of my aquarium, so long as it's just the water I hear and not the machinery. I've never found a really quiet air pump, for example. If I could just hear the bubbles, that would be OK, but the buzzing of the pump drives me nuts. Ditto HOB filters. My bio-wheel does make waterfall noises, but it's just the water I hear so I like it. I had another type of filter (can't remember the name, but it was spectacularly sucky) that I could hear the impellor and that noise really bothered me.
Different strokes, you know.
No airstones, no air pumps, no HOBs. Canisters, no splashing, blessed peace and quiet. IMHO, fishtanks should be seen and not heard.

bio-wheels are the definitely the most noisy filter out there. you can hear like an odd bubbling sound coming from the tank. i don't really mind it, but it's much noisier then my AC on my other tank.

My mom hates the pump noises but doesn't mind hearing water. I love to hear my bio-wheels because I know they are working. Also Bio-Wheels are not the noisiest HOB filter. IMO it is the Tetratec HOB filter series. They are excellent filters once you get them to work right. I like the water noises, they put me right to sleep. :)

I cant imagine putting up with the racket a standard airpump puts out. Splashing water is acceptable, but mechanicals hums definitely are not.

The sound of gently falling water is soothing, but the only time I hear it is when my tank needs topping off (usually when I'm three or four days past due for a water change ...). The quietest filter is the Aqua Clear. The 200 I've got is NEVER audible. It's a lot quieter than the "Whisper" I tried (how ironic ...)

Trickling of water is nice WHEN I WANT IT. But it gets REALLY annoying when you don't want it.
I'm re-grouping my tank to be all canisters because having the trickling of a HOB in the living room while watching TV or listening to music just got to be too much.

I love that sound of the water, it is very comforting, it sounds like it is raining and i love that sound.

Some of my filters make the sound which mix the sound of falling water and the buzzing of the powerhead.:)

My aquarium makes no noise at all. I'm wondering if I'm lucky? --- Really -- no noise.....

Does BGKs,frogs or clown loaches doing a symphony considered aquarium noises?

When the noise of the HOB filters bothers me I top the tank off until its filled to the rim. I don't use air pumps so the only other noises I ever hear from my tanks is the clicking of loaches or the bang of a cichlid knocking a heater around.

Mine is only 6 gallons with the bio-wheel and I CANNOT hear it at all! Unless I have my top off.
I like the sounds of water, though -- we have a place that is 15 feet from the lake and I even put a pond on my patio to hear the water noises when the water is still!

i cant even hear the person next to me when i listen to music much less a tank 3 rooms away. but i did realize how much i missed the sound of all the water movement in the tank room when the power went off for a few hours. it was just too silent.
Air pumps are probably the number one cause of noise regarding aquariums. Second would probably be a filter that has some problem either wearing out or some other problem with it-?
I have not been bothered by low constant noises but sometimes those pumps can make a lot of noise and we must fix them or adjust how they are hanging or sitting. :)
