I am thinking about switching from the 2 Emporer 400 filters on the back of my 55 gallon tank to the kind of filter that the canister goes under the tank and just has the hoses going up the back. My Emporer filters are hard to change because of the wooden cannopy top and the stuff next to the tank, plus it will allow me to get the tank closer to the wall. But first I would like some opinions on the filter canisters that go under the tank. (I don't remember what the fish store guy called them)
they are called canister filters. IMO the top of the line is probably eheim. Make sure you get one that can handle more than a 55. I think the 2024 or 2026 can go up to 75G, so it could grow with you. I have a Fluval 204 on my 37G and it operates just fine, but will be upgrading to an eheim sometime in the next 3-6 mos.
Best deals I've found online are at www.bigalsonline.com. Much less expensive than at the LFS.

You may also want to research the Filstar XP filters. They are excellent canister filters, and a more moderately priced. I love mine!
