I have an eheim 2217 that I'll be adding to my reef, (when I set it up)

Should I be putting anything in the eheim? Or use it just for water circulation, and the occasional dosage or carbon ?

Some people tell me to put a cloth/sponge, but I hear its better to leave it empty..

Thanks for your oppinions.. :)

Read this thread for my opinions on the use of canister filters in saltwater tanks:

The only thing that might be useful is carbon. Carbon is a matter of endless debate, but I find it makes a big difference in getting rid of the toxins the soft corals secrete. I can tell whe it's time to replace it when the hard corals stop extending strongly.

Mechanical filtration will have to be replaced religiously, because it will trap debris which will then break down into nitrate. The other problem is that your inverts are releasing all sorts of goodies, like eggs and larvae, that are good to eat. You'll lose out on this with mechanical filtration.

Summary: my opinion is to leave it empty or put in carbon, but no floss or cloth.

Thanks for the suggestions...

Seeing how I have the filter, I'll use it, but with no media inside....

I'll put some carbon prob. once a month, but that's about it..

thanks guys.. :)

You can also put some base rock in it for some extra biofiltration.
