View Full Version : Question on an Emperor 280
When i put medicince in my tank for like ICK I know I have to remove the carbon, but my question is the Emperor Filter Cartridge as a little bit of Carbon in it also. So do I need to femove the filter also, If so how long can the filter be removed before my tank starts looking dirty?

Carbon can and does remove some chemicals. However it expires after a while. If the carbon is old it may not need to be removed at all. How long has the carbon been in the tank and what medications are you adding?
The Carbon as only been in their for about wek and a half, the medicine Im adding is called Cure-Ick
I took the Media Container out of my filter but on the Emperor the filter itself has some carbon with the filter. So Im Confused on if I need to also take the filter out with the Media Container. Somebody else told me to Carefully cut the back of my Filter cartridge and try to remove the Carbon from it that way I dont have to remove the filter itself.
Carbon generally remains effective for about 2 weeks. I would take the whole cartridge out, it can't hurt (it's only good for mechanical filtration at this point). With a medicated tank, you wiill be doing a lot o f water changes anyway. When you are done medicating, replace it.
Maybe I'm not explaining my slef very good :( let me try a little better.
On the Emperor 280 the Filter cartridge has Carbon built into it, I know I need to remove the Emperor Media Container when treating my tank with medicine, but if i was to remove the filter Cartridge also since it has Carbon mixed with it, what would be the point in keeping my filter running without the filter itself in their to clean up the tank?
I hope I explained this some what better and maybe somebody could help shine some light on this for me.
Im new to the fishing world and my frist try at setting up my tank failed and this is my second time (hoping I can keep my fish alive this time)

The real point of a filter is to circulate and oxygenate the water for the bacteria in the aquarium and on the Bio-Wheel. The filter pad is just for catching large pieces of debris. And the carbon is for chemical filtration of dissolved substances. It won't really matter if you remove the filter pad while the tank is medicated. The carbon in the pad will remove medication even if it is few weeks old. So it is best to remove it during medication.
With my Penguin 280, I've taken 8 filter pads and cut open the plastic backings to remove all the carbon. This way I can clean the pads (with a bleach solution) and re-use them over and over again. If I want to use carbon I add the media container to the Penguin 280.
