Ive got 2 really chubby Zebra danio's, this is prolly a newbie question put in the newbie forum, but what the hell, i was just wonderin if they are fat, or if they're female and have eggs in them, i know they're not live bearers, but i was just wonderin if they females get rather chubby just before they spawn or whether its just that these two danio's have been eating a few too many pies (no, i dont feed them pies :p)

excellent, just found a couple of black fry hiding in one of my plants close to the surface and i have no dark livebearers to fingers crossed they'll survive and i'll get too see what they are :D

Breeding danios is very simple...there are many good article on the net about it. Here is one in particular:

He uses a screen to allow the eggs to drop to the bottom. Using marbles as substrate is also common practice.

No real trick to getting them to breed. Just put a male with a couple of females and you are sure to have it happen....

To whom ever was hoping the fry would survive in a tank with adult danios: NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!
Unless, you intervene, ie: Move the adults or fry to another tank! When I first bought my z.danios, I put them in my tank and they spawned right away. 3 days later I saw little curled fry, and then 3 days after that they were swimming around and becoming lunch for the adults (v. good for conditioning!!). I saved two, put them in a half gallon tupper ware container with a plant and an air pump, and bought some INFUSORIA (buy this if you want your fry to live!). The two survived but I eventually added them to my 10 gallon with the rest of my danio fry.
I have ~200 fry now, about 3 months old. That's how many you will get if you do it with marbles and remove the adults. Now the problem is that they are in a 10 and 23 gallon tank, and they still need more room. So if you want them all to live I'd say a 55 gallon would be optimal. If not, you can feed the fry when they are ~3-5 days old to the adults so as to limit the number you will have in the future. I am selling them to Aquarium Services for the huge price of 25 cents for two fish. hahaha. 20$ for all the fish.... eepp!
Good luck, feel free to ask more questions!
