I was wondering if the Fluval 304 is a good canister filter. The LFS here has them on sale for $99.96 CDN which is about $65-$70 USD. Opinions and/or personal experience regarding the 304 would be greatly appreciated. Internet whole salers are not really an option for me because once the shipping exchange rate are taken into account it is cheaper to buy from the LFS. Also Big Al's has great prices in the United States, but the Canadian online store has awful prices, for example an AC500 is $74.99.I am in need or another filter or my 90 gallon as it only has a Magnum 350 and an Emp 280 (630gph). I cannot get an AC500 or an Emp400 (although an AC300 or another Emp 280 will fit) because my they won't fit in the spaces on my lid. Thanks for the help.

Get the Rena Filstar xP-3 instead. I have found the xP-3 to filter the water better than Fluval. The xP-3 is a much better filter. There are many options on intake and outflow set-up, and this filter has handles that the Fluvals don't. It's priced right too....

I hate having to practically hug the Fluval to pick it up for cleaning.

If you still want the Fluval, get the 404, not the 304. The 304 is rated for up to only 70 gallon tanks.

Unless you can get the Filstar for the same price I would go with the Fluval. Getting a 304 for under $100 cdn is a great price. I bought mine for about $140 and have never seen one for under $100.

Just make sure that it is the newer breed of fluval.

I have a fluval 303, which is a out-dated version of a fluval 304, it's on my 28 gallon tank, its so smooth running and quite, i strongly suggest a fluval filter, hardly ever needs cleaning, its a great filter IMO.

But since your tank size, I whould suggest a fluval 404

The 304 would not be the only filter on the tank 80gJoe. I said in the original post that I already have a 350 mag and an emp 280 on the tank. With those three filters I would have 890gph, which is enough IMO.

I have a 304 on my 55gal tank (along with a couple HOBs and a powerhead) and it works pretty good.... it will give you a very large amount of biological filtration. I have run into a few problems... I've had a locking clip break on me..and the hoses could have been designed in a better way. If I had the money at the time, I think an eheim would have been a better choice, but the fluval works pretty good. I can get the 304's decently cheap, so I might buy a couple more in the future.
