As I understand it, Ich spots are very small white dots, like salt granule size? So if it is bigger than that (still not huge...maybe half the diameter of a pencil eraser) it is probably fungus? Am I right on these?

...at least it is not ich. Fungus or bacteria is still questionable.

merlin4260, is there a way for you to post a pic of what you are talking about?

try as I might, no. My digital won't focus through the glass. I even tried getting the 2 affected fish into a couple of the little betta cups to take pictures...still fuzzy. But my quest to get pictures has given me another look at the betta that had been hiding though. When I first saw it, the spot was white and not very, but a little fluffy. Now it is almost certianly an ulcer. The the Spot on the Red-Tailed Shark is still white. But it looks like I'm dealing with a bacterial problem now instead of fungus.

Fungus is actually rare in the aquarium, while bacteria and parasitic infections are common. From your description, I would say bacterial--the fluffiness is not as noticable on small patches. If it now looks like an ulcer--open wound, with red edges, etc, then that would be bacterial if it continues to expand. Otherwise, if could be healing--time will tell.
