now this might seem obvious to some of you........
it hit me a few weeks back that i was tired of tripping over those grey media baskets. i had stored them in the tank stand and i have like 8 of them now......
i took them and stuffed them back in the running filters (empty). now they appear to be working as a large size pre-filter. running in the filter like that they will eventually bypass (water passes over them) and will need to be cleaned.... it seemed like a free way to remove a little extra junk.....
just something you might want to try.........
good luck

I've always kept floss in my baskets- any gunk removal is good gunk removal.

Yeah I just keep the 100% polyester batting in mine all the time....

Ditto on the poly batting... it's cheap and easy! Just go to your local fabric or hobby store and buy a large sheet used for quilt-making. You can get it in sheets of various thickness and sizes. I like the 1/2" or so thickest one and a sheet that will make a 4' x 6' or so quilt is less than $10!! In fact, that's all I use anymore after getting tired of the expensive replacable cartridges! Plus, I don't use any carbon in my planted tanks!
Good luck,
Bill C.
I use floss in some of mine also. But on the bigger tanks, I ended up putting Fluval bio-max ceramic rings in them. About 4-5 rings fit perfectly in each row and greatly expand the bacteria culture space. I got the idea from those cell pore inserts. :)

i have the 2 media baskets in my penguin 330 full of those ceramic rings, probably doubles the biologic filtration capacity, and it pre-filters really well.
before those (which i just put in tonight) i had aquaclear sponges stuffed in them.
why not use them if they are there, just get something that doesnt take any maintenance and forget about it.

you dont by any means HAVE to have anything, so it doesnt really matter what you put in them, it will help.
