hey everyone,
I had a little problem over the weekend while i was away. The bio-wheel in my Eclipse system seems to have slowed down ( about a year old) to the point where the pump seems to be pulling more water out of the tank than the biowheel is allowing through. While I was away this weekend the constant extra rush of water moved some of the filter material forward and slowed the waters progress even more. It overflowed about 4 gallons worth onto my carpet ( Mmmmmmm, yum ) but no harm to any of the inhabitants. Do you think a prefilter pad over the intake would slow the intake flow a bit??? Any suggestions would be appreciated!!! Thanks ahead of time..

This is kinda a hardware question but anyway.
Are you useing the standard filter packs?
How do you wash them?
I never had a bit of luck replaceing the factory pads with ANYTHING else:( The only thing that didnt plug it up was some golfball sized lava rocks after a while they acted as mechanical as they had so muck growth on them.

for filter material I use the standard replacements with a layer of additional filter floss on top of that. I rinse them each week with my water change in the old water before i dispose of it, pretty standard. I even emptied out the charcoal after a couple days and cut out some of the plastic backing to open up the bottom for easy flow through. I hope that by adding a little prefilter sponge it might reduce the draw from the tank.

Make sure the biowheel can spin easily. The little slots that hold the pins sometimes will build up with crud and such, slowing the bio-wheel down. I use a toothbrush to clean the pins and the slots, usually about once every 6 months.
I replaced the filter media with a cut sponge. It has worked very well other than requiring that I clean out the box occassionally--some solids settle down and wash into the tank when the sponge is removed otherwise.
