This is our new ball python Attila.:headbang2: After deciding between a corn snake or ball python we got her. I think shes about a year to a year an a half old. She is about 30 inches long. She was alil skinny when we got her cuz Petsmart wasn't feeding her enough they were feeding her smalls and pinky's, so we started feeding her jumbo mice which I think is about right for her now. My g/f works there so we got a discount on it. She's in a 20 long with an UTH and an infrared right now. We used coconut bark for substrate does anyone know if this is good for ball pythons. She seems to like it and burrows alot at night in it.

I work at petsmart. We're not allowed to feed our snakes live food... It's "cruel". It really sucks because ball pythons are picky eaters, and the ones sent to our stores aren't used to frozen food. So sadly most pet smart snakes are malnutritioned.

Anyways, I use the same substrate for some of my larger constrictors. It's good for shedding. ^_^
 
my roommate was considering a ball python and he was gonna use aspen shavings. thats what i see them kept in at the local petco here
 
Aspen is what I usually see in petstores too. It can be used for any type of snake, where as the coconut bark is unsuitable for smaller bodied snakes with thinner skin, like colubrids. It's easier to use the universal bedding when you have multiple animals to worry about.
 
Aspen shavings are probably your best bet for an all around good purpose substrate. Coco bark is used for animals that need high humidity levels. We have to keep in mind whats best for the welfare of the animal as opposed to whats pleasing to the eye. ;)
