Hi guys, I'm new to this forum:)
My little 10gallon freshwater tank has just run into a problem that I can't identify (I have never seen anything like it )
There is a whitish grayish translucent looking filmy feathery thing "growing" off of the gravel that just flows with the current from the filter--it looks like it could be a fungus but I'm not sure--the fish are perfectly healthy they don't seem to have any signs of fungus on them or anything--the only reason I haven't thouroughly cleaned it out yet is because I was wondering if it could possibly be a good source of biological filtration?
but I need to find out what it is first of course;) theres nothing like it mentioned in my aquarium book and I was unable to find it online as well (although I don't really have a specific name for it to search properly;) ) If I can find the digital camera I'll upload a picture of it and put it on my webshots page for you to look at--but until then any ideas? Thanks!

It's hard to say but it does sound like some sort of fungus. If it is, it is most likely caused by overfeeding. I had some problems with something like you when I started out the hobby because I overfed. i would use your gravel vak to suck it away and do a good vaccum of your substrate. Most likely not a source of good bacteria so I would get rid of it.

Silver, I'm interested to know how this turned out for you. I have a 10g planted tank and am noticing this cloud like stuff in my plants. I'm almost positive I've been overfeeding my fish so I'm cutting way back.

Were you able to vac it out and did it stay gone?
