i have recently been turned on to the wonders of adding salt to my aquarium water. i was wondering if i actually had to purchase "aquarium salt" from a fish store or can i use the free running iodized table salt that sells for less than a dollar at the grocery store? if so, are the amounts the same.....1 tbsp per 5 gallons? if not, what's the difference between the two.

I believe you want NON-iodized salt for you tanks. Not sure if the iodized table salt will really do much harm, but I do know that a lot of the table salt products for home use also have other chemicals in there... and, I'm not a chemist, but I'd hate to put stuff in a tank that's not meant to be there.

I'd love to hear what others have to say about this.

By the way... not new to the site, but new to the forums. Hoping to learn a lot more here.

regular salt is fine just make sure it dosn't have anticaking chemicals and stuff like that

I'm just curious maigen, what are your reasons for adding salt?
and what kinds of fish are you keeping?

i had some problems with angels eating my guppies & attacking other fish. when i spoke to someone at the fish store about what kind of meds that i should get for my fishies war wounds they recommended trying salt to see if that worked as a non-medicinal treatment. they also went on to praise the all round value of it for improving gill function & adding electrolytes to the water. the wounds cleared up completely in less than 48 hours.

i have 2 swords, 2 fancy tail guppies, 4 mollies (1 dalmation, 1 marbled & 2 ballon), an albino clawed frog, an african dwarf frog, 2 clown loaches, 2 albino rainbow sharks & a tiny pleco....got rid of the 2 angel fish
